The Worst Albums Ever Made – ‘Olly Murs’ (2010) by Olly Murs

28 Jun

By Slick Nick

There is an Olly Murs in every school, every university and every office in the UK; a tiresome, annoying self-centered twat who you dare not get on the wrong side of for fear of being socially ostracised. By no means evil or unpleasant, they can never the less make life hell in so many other ways.

Despite being average-looking, having nothing of interest to say and wearing unremarkable highstreet clothing, they somehow draw people to them like moths to light. Resisting the light will prove controversial, since every conversation or gathering will revolve around this individual, effectively a conversational blackhole, sucking all matter into it that may be even slightly interesting in favour of what the Murs figure may be doing or not doing.

Thanks to Simon Cowell, one of these cheeky chappies was given a record deal, which meant even escaping into a car and puting the radio on presented a confrontation with the mundanity of their existence. The result is ‘Olly Murs’, an album featuring the best part of an hour’s worth of crap music.

Murs came second to Joe McElderry in 2009’s X Factor, arguably the shittest winner in the show’s history, and that’s saying something. This album is described as his ‘debut’, but that suggests a long discography is to follow. I really think, and hope, that this album alone will span Murs’ entire recording history, for the sake of pop music.

Upon first listen, the one thing that stands out alongside the staggering mediocrity is how tonally uneven the material is. It lurches from anthemy pop, to raggae, to sappy ballads. It’s like if a Leona Lewis song suddenly dropped in a thrashy guitar solo.

Looking at the chart positions of the four singles from this illustrates perfectly how fickle the British single-buying public are, and also what a missfire it was on Cowell’s part for launching Murs as a recording artist. Single one was a UK number one. Single four didn’t even make the top 40.

Cunt: Murs glimpses his net worth as a musician in 2011

Hit single ‘Please Don’t Let Me Go’ begins with an old radio effect, which is quite creative for a SYCO release, before stumbling into very dated-sounding raggae pop. I remember Murs being described by Cowell as ‘unbeleivably current’ at his first audition. True – nothing says 2011 like aping the chart music of 1993. It’s not quite as forgettable as the rest of the album but is no Aswad.

Follow-up ‘Thinking Of Me’ is more of the same, but worse.

Murs has a stab at warbling during the closing moments of ‘Heart On My Sleeve’, where things get a bit more serious. It reminds me of the modern Take That. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the army of song-writers and producers that worked on Murs’ atrocity had also spent time in the studio with Robbie and Gary et al. Speaking of the legendary boyband, there was also some serious bro love going down between Murs and Robbie Williams at the time of the X Factor live finals, which saw the two irritants perform an extremely mediocre duet together. This probably carefully spun PR between the managers of Murs and Williams stopped just short of the two sucking each other off on stage, but I digress.

Lyrically, the album sinks to a new low with ‘Busy’. Reminiscent of Bruno Mars, it uses the Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ chord progression, as does ‘Don’t Say Goodbye’. Considering the album had 20-30 people contributing to the music, it’s unacceptable to use this riff on two songs from the same album. It really bugs me how often these chords are used, in pop and rock, and is just illustrative of unoriginal, lazy song-writing. Unsurprisingly, both of the efforts on this album are terrible.

Hold onto your sides: This illustrates visually the points made in paragraphs 1 and 2

Surrounding the four singles, which never get better than way below mediocre, is a lot of filler fluff that barely registers. It’s certainly not worth writing about, apart from noting that Murs as a singer leaves a hell of a lot to be desired.

Finally, the whole Murs persona on television and in the media really winds me up. There is an air of undeserved smugness about him, as if he has always been fully aware that he has fuck all to offer the world of popular music and is completely talentless. I hope everyone involved with his album, from Cowell to the song-writers, to the producers, even down to the intern that did the photocopying for marketing, are thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

      Hi Michelle, thanks for reading.

The point of the articles under ‘the worst albums ever made’ is to find, listen to and then warn people of the worst albums ever made. You haven’t been able to change my mind on the music’s worth in Olly’s crap album. You’ve just launched into a super-liberal rant.

It was quite hard to understand your tirade because of the very poor use of the Queen’s English. May I recommend some adult literacy classes for you?

      • poppeelings April 13, 2012 at 3:25 pm #

Thanks Kev, some reason at last.

      • Robyn February 12, 2013 at 8:22 am #

Firstly, have you actually even met Olly, to know what he’s really like?
Second, why did you listen and buy the album if you don’t like it/him? (Thanks for the album sales contribution:) )
And third, the majority of things in that article are WRONG facts, not just your opinion

    • Ben P Scott (RW/FF) (@rwffmusic) August 30, 2013 at 10:46 am #

Wrong. He’s shit and you know it. Accept it.

    • Bruno February 15, 2015 at 7:55 am #

I completely disagree. OM is annoying and he’s song are cheesey!

  2. dave scott December 21, 2011 at 12:15 am #

just a hyped up holiday camp singer, with so much talent out there its a shame that this twat gets away with it, Simon Cowell should be hung for inflicting this crap on us

Finally, someone with taste is commenting on an article here. Thanks for reading, sir.

Another cabaret entertainer nobody. What a twat. He’s like a Poundland Robbie Williams but even worse.

  3. Katie March 29, 2012 at 12:58 am #

I sincerely hope that you never put In Case You Didn’t Know in this vile category. I do not know how you personally could write such a load of crap! When you’ve made millions I believe that is when you can criticise people! Up to this point Mr. Murs is worth 3 Million pounds! That’s what, 2,999,999.99 more than you. I hope my ‘Queens English’ is up to your standards.

    • poppeelings March 29, 2012 at 9:21 am #

The ‘crap’ I have written is a carefully considered and reasoned critique on a shit pop album.

Why should only millionairres have free speech? That sounds like fascism to me.

Your use of English is fine… probably better than Murs’ but when you have 10-15 people writing all your songs for you, illiteracy matters little.

      • Millie April 12, 2012 at 8:23 pm #

Olly has wrote all of his songs apart from heart skips a beat so take that into consideration before you critisise him. Thank you, when you make millions and famous in many countries then you can say this, but only then

      • poppeelings April 13, 2012 at 3:07 pm #

Ok Millie let me get my guitar.

Awesome reply poppeelings. I think its a brilliant, and spot on review that could maybe educate poor pathetic sheep like Katie if people liek her read it properly. they think that just because twats like Murs are famous it means theyre any good? he’s famous for going on telly and singing karaoke.

      • poppeelings August 31, 2013 at 8:13 pm #

Thanks Ben. I sacrificed a lot of time to bring this to the people, who have a right to know the truth.

You are basically an every day, lonesome, boring son of a bitch that no one cares about. Stop with your shit comments and get a life, you worthless piece of rubbish. No one knows who you are, but most people love and know Olly Murs (except for dicks like you) so for god’s sake get a life you twat!!!!!!!!!!

  4. MM April 4, 2012 at 1:03 am #

Sorry chap, but this article is complete hogwash.

At the start of the article, you just sound like someone who was bullied at school and is taking your childhood angst out on the pretty and popular kids you hated but wanted to be.

On the subject of the music, it’s a fantastic album with quality the whole way through, a rarity in pop music these days. Each and every song is extremely catchy and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to.

You mention it being “tonally uneven”. Do you not think it’s good that there’s a range of genre involved?

As for the “air of undeserved smugness” about Murs… You seem to be the most awful judge of character. He is famously down-to-earth and modest, so many a reader would mistakenly interpret your opinions about him in this article as sarcastic on first glance. And “talentless”? Though he might not be a world-class singer, he is certainly an extremely talented individual, not only as someone who managed to make a name for himself with solid performances under intense pressure throughout the entirety of Britain’s most famous show (out of thousands upon thousands of auditionees) but also as a former semi-professional footballer (though you don’t seem like the sort of person who appreciates the talent of the football-playing type).

    In conclusion:

    Murs = talented, good-looking, down-to-earth
Album = consistent, extremely catchy, tonally diverse
Your article = a bit silly, really.

    Rant over.

    • poppeelings April 4, 2012 at 6:54 am #

How much is Murs paying you? I’ll double it.

Joking aside Martin, thanks for the calm, reasoned response to my article, a rarity amongst the Murs fan community I must say.

Strongly disagree on the music, it’s awful and catchy in the wrong way, if at all.

Really Martin, you think thousands auditioned on X Factor? Let me explain… they pick the singers before they go in front of the judges, sometimes using talent scouts and youtube. Then, out of the ones that appear to be able to hold a note, they give them TV/press time for weeks, gradually manipulating the public, moulding them like play-doh, to vote and keep them in for as many weeks possible. Now, Murs’ performances were consistently lackluster, demonstrating a very limited vocal range and appalling dance moves. I will always cherish the fact that Murs lost to Joe McElderry, one of the worst winners in the show’s history.

Why would I appreciate the talent of a semi-professional footballer? That just means he wasn’t good enough to do it properly.

Let’s see what the States make of Murs. I’ll bet he’ll be back in rainy Essex, tail between his legs, working at the call center and doing kick-ups in his parents’ back garden before you know it.

      • Megan February 12, 2013 at 12:29 am #

‘That just means he wasn’t good enough to do it properly’ He injured his back? Not his fault. Jesus get some facts !!?

  5. Ella April 12, 2012 at 5:35 pm #

Idiot! That’s all I can say!
    Look at Olly now!
Number ones in the UK, Germany, Switzerland and soon to be Austrailia and the US!
You utter failure of a reviewer!
Your just jealous of his amazing personality, singing voice, dance moves and sex appeal!
With a sell out theatre tour and arena your, with 4 number one singles, 2 triple selling albums and another one too come, awards such as Beat Male and fans like the Murs Army under his belt there’s nothing who can stop him!
Get a life and stop bullying celebrities! We don’t care about your opinion. Now take this trash of the Internet!
    From The Murs Army!

  6. Bekah April 12, 2012 at 6:06 pm #

Have you accomplished anything in saying that? What was achieved in saying his albums are rubbish, without any evidence to prove? If you read the comments, it is clear you have just written a load of rubbish and you are just jealous of that amazing man. Have you got sold out arena tours? Are you touring America with One Direction? Have you had number one hits, in multiple countries? I don’t think so. Maybe, if you have, you would stop being a fool and see the light. Now, as Ella said, Murs Army doesn’t care about your opinion and you should take this trash off the internet now!!

    • Ella April 12, 2012 at 6:17 pm #

      Yes!
The Murs Army can beat this shit head! 😀 ❤

    • poppeelings April 13, 2012 at 3:23 pm #

If they dont care about my opinion why do they want it removed from the interweb?

  7. Lucy April 12, 2012 at 6:38 pm #

I read the first paragraph and am immediately angered at how poor and unreliable your article is!
For a start, “annoying self-centered twat”. This statement is wrong in so many ways. Olly is the most down to earth celebrity to this day. He always puts others before himself, does everything for his fans and hasn’t in any way let fame ‘get to his head’. So now, do you care to explain how he is “self-centered”?
I’ll have you know that this album Olly Murs, is over double platinum and has a number one single, on top of two other singles which went to top 10, and the album itself was the biggest week one album sales for a debut album. Now, tell me more about how “rubbish” this album is. And as for you jealousy on this album alone, it probably made more in the first week of sales, than you will in your lifetime. Never mind how much Olly is worth, which i’ll tell you now, you’ll never reach to be as loved.
With one of his singles, Olly currently holds number one in UK, France, Germany and Switzerland, and is soon to become international in the US and Australia.
You are nothing but a jealous, pathetic reporter, with nothing better to do with your life than make up silly articles with has no proof to word.
So take your invalid point and leave the internet. Your life consists of bullying celebrities due to jealousy, which is getting you nowhere in life. How does that make you feel?
Have fun envying Olly while he is making continuous success while you sit in front of a computer screen giving worthless hate.

    • poppeelings April 13, 2012 at 3:21 pm #

Ah yes European countries have great taste in music eg. Germany who treated David Hasselhoff like John Lennon. Also plenty of good bands never made any money like Ramones and Black Flag.

      • Seonaid October 7, 2013 at 8:15 pm #

Olly Murs is an unattractive, knock knee’d, boss eyed, shit singing over entitled little Essex twat. Another puppet from the cesspit of Cowel et al. When are these monopolising scumbags going to let youngsters appreciate quality music and the fact that turning up at an audition does not equal fame or success. What a load of crap…

      • jonny5 June 19, 2015 at 6:29 pm #

john lennon was a petulant psychopathic toddler, who beat both his wives , bullied his kid and sang about peace on earth fom thw window of his roller

  8. charlotte April 12, 2012 at 6:42 pm #

I understand you have your own opinion on Olly, but slagging him off like this is highly unnecessary!! To you he may not be anything special but to many people he is, and he is doing something with his life, can you really slate a person for following their dreams?! I don’t think that he is smug in any way but happy with his life. Your article is about the worst albums ever made, I personally believe this not to be true, Olly’s music touches the hearts of many people and for me when I listen to Olly Murs’ music it makes me feel that little bit better about my life this is only my opinion much like the article is yours and your entitled to it but why do you feel the need to slate him to the ground? I mean the article is about the worst album not his personal life. Your making Olly out to be a bad person but really for writing this your seeming to be that bad person :s please note I’m not writing this to change your mind and your view on Olly but purely because I don’t believe that publishing your hate for Olly is needed. I understand that Olly Murs is not everyone’s cup of tea and he doesn’t claim to be, but he has his fair share of fans so his music couldn’t be that bad!!

    • poppeelings April 13, 2012 at 3:17 pm #

I dont judge music by how many fans it does or does not have.

  9. lauren fraser April 12, 2012 at 6:57 pm #

sorry but clearly Olly is absolutly amazing and there was no need for this shitty report! He is bloody stunning, has amazing dress sense,an amaazzzing personality and basically he is just an amazing person!! he doesnt act like the normal celebrities by going out and buying stupid things to flash their money and he is just a normal guy who likes singing!!! your clearly jealous of him thats why you wrote that shit!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Melissa April 12, 2012 at 6:58 pm #

no. just no. Olly is an amazing singer, his voice and style is unique.. thats the whole idea of his albums! they’re supposed to be a mix of different styles of music. Also i dont see how he can be called ‘a tiresome, annoying self-centered twat’
tiresome? really, you think hes tiresome?.. you’re going back on your own words there, he mixes his albums so they dont get boring, its a different style with every track. annoying, obviously he isn’t as he has fans.. fair enough not everyones going to like him. its impossible. self-centered twat? honestly? you really should do your research first! he loves and cares for his fan base more than anyone and anything in the world! everything he does is for his fan base, so hes hardly a self-centered twat. now thats cleared up. bye.

    • poppeelings April 13, 2012 at 3:15 pm #

Why would he care about people he’s never met more than his own family? That’s not very nice.

      • Megan February 12, 2013 at 12:32 am #

BECAUSE THEY LOVE HIM, HELP HIM AND SUPPORT HIM

  11. lauren fraser April 12, 2012 at 6:59 pm #

urg!!! Murs Army will beat this twat for saying shit about our olly!!!! everything that is said above in that article isnt true!!

    • poppeelings April 13, 2012 at 3:13 pm #

The Murs army only has about 2.5k followers on Twitter. That is more like a garrison.

      • Megan February 12, 2013 at 12:18 am #

Olly now has almost 4 million followers?? There’s thousands, maybe millions in the Murs Army around the world

      • Ellie February 12, 2013 at 1:09 am #

Yeah. Olly has HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of fans! Honestly who is your source of information? Its so pathetic, its laughable.

  12. Katie April 12, 2012 at 7:05 pm #

look, i haven’t even read all of this properly , i really cant be arsed because it a load of bollox! now im not saying what you have wrote is wrong because you are totally 100% entitled to your own opinion of things, but we can always debate weather you think what you wrote is wrong or right, and personally i think its wrong,
“tiresome, annoying self-centered twat” if you find it really that disgusting then
    A. why listen to his album?
    B. why write this?
AND C. dont judge a book by its cover (even if the cover is very nice)
“average-looking” you cant please everyone ayy
“wearing unremarkable highstreet clothing”,you know what, that’s a good thing because it shows that fame&money hasn’t gone to his head, he’s real, not like most celebs who just spend spend spend because they have money
“album featuring the best part of an hour’s worth of crap music” why buy it and why listen to it then, if you hate him sooo much in the first place?
“Single one was a UK number one.” doesn’t that tell you that he’s got to be abit good because people bought his music?
“It reminds me of the modern Take That.” well, i dont know how you can compare Olly to a band because he’s a solo artist, but that’s great because Take That are global superstars!
thank-you for your time to the twat whoever wrote this:-)

    • poppeelings April 13, 2012 at 3:12 pm #

      I downloaded the album.

      • Ellie February 12, 2013 at 1:11 am #

But you still listened to it. Obviously.

  13. Beth April 12, 2012 at 7:20 pm #

Oh wow! Doesn’t this make you sound like such a LOVELY person?!

Do you seriously have nothing better to do with your life than being horrible about people that have done nothing wrong to you, or in fact at all?

The fact that you think its ok to be so horrible to nice people makes me feel sorry for you.

  14. Eadaoin Butler April 12, 2012 at 7:28 pm #

Slick Nick who are you to say anything about Olly! He is not ‘an annoying self centered twat’! He does a load of charity work: Comic Relief, Sport Relief, SoccorAid, Make A Wish Foundation, Brainwave, which supports children with conditions including cerebral palsy, Down’s Syndrome, autism and developmental delay. He also supports AIDS, Cancer, Children’s Rights, Disaster Relief, Fair Trade, Health, Homelessness, Human Rights, Hunger, and Poverty causes. If thats what you consider self centered you need a physicological evaluation! I disagree with what you said about his music but that is your idiotic opinion. It is a FACT that he is better looking than your average male, have you seen him? If you dont want to listen to him in your car, DONT PUT THE FUCKING RADIO ON!! The reason thats he is on the radio so much is because hes what people want to hear! And the reason he sings so many differnet genres is because he has the voice to do it! It doesn’t just suit one style! And in case you didnt know most pop songs have the same chord progression! You really should not be writing reviews when you havent got a clue what your saying! How is it un-orignal and lazy song writing? Thats what the public like! The songs are written to please the public are they not? You said ‘It’s certainly not worth writing about’ then why the fuck did you?! The only thing Olly Murs leaves left to be desired are fantasies! How does he have fuck all to offer the world of popular music? Even forgetting his music he was a SEMI-PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYER so you cannot say that he is completely talentless. You have just been added to over 1,900,000 peoples hate list.

    • poppeelings April 13, 2012 at 3:10 pm #

The charity work is PR to fuel record sales. Cowell is no philanthropist, trust me.

      • Megan February 12, 2013 at 12:22 am #

Omg you really can’t judge people very well. Olly hasn’t even spoken to Simon in ages. He loves helping charities and everything, you dont even know him

      • Ellie February 12, 2013 at 1:13 am #

Olly has trekked across the desert and spent time in Africa helping people there. So self-centered……….no.

Karas right. We are an Army, we help either, you should see all the groups existing on social networking such as bbm. We all talk all the time, we tell each other the Olly news, when he’s on tv. When I’m upset, I know I can turn to absolutely ANY Ollyette, I have never known a mean, bitchy, girl who is fickle in her loyalties to Olly. I get so mad when people act like they’re an Ollyette but they don’t know the basic facts about him. Its Dedication NOT Obssession.

  16. Anthony April 23, 2012 at 12:11 am #

This really has made my night.. The article is genius, and the comments somewhat over the top. Poppeelings is entitled to his/her opinion and I find that if anyone of these “fans” read the article they would see he/she was rather complimentary about Olly not only calling him “mundane” but also a “twat” which I think is more than fair! As a person living in London who looks somewhat like the Murs I am on a day to day basis acosted for in being said Murs, to not only my annoyance but that of random strangers. Thanks for your comment girls, long live music?? I believe not.

Also just so you all know it’s you’re, not your…

    Love

    • poppeelings April 28, 2012 at 10:08 pm #

The true genius is in the comments disagreeing with my post. I merely provide a blank canvas in the form of a researched, informed and clear article from which the Murs Garrison paints a masterpiece of failure. Keep up te hatred bro and allow me to pass my sympathies to you for having to live with a Murs-like head.

Oh yes, it’s 2013 and here he is with another number one album and a number one single from it so far. He’s here to stay, get used to it because a majority like him, i don’t blame them because he’s not a one hit wonder.

You are so discusting. Olly never hurt anyone and I think you need to get your own life, and stop judging others. your pathetic and its people like you who make the world a bad place. Olly made my world a better place, his music made me a better person and everyone should aspire to be like him, with his spirt, drive and determination plus his good luck, witty jokes, charm and his beautiful personality. People who write things like this just show how jelous they are of him, but its should make you aspire to be as goo a person as him. This is where people like you and him separate this world, he would never disrespect someone, over the internet or otherwise. Unlike you who feels the need to take you own insucuritys out on others, so if you dont mind….. JOG ON LOVE. P.S olly murs has the biggest bludge in the world, arent you so jelous. though so dick.

  19. Frank May 8, 2012 at 5:29 pm #

Lol brilliant article! I’ve always thought exactly the same! He just reminds me of the school poseur who is reasonable at karoake! But good luck to him, it’s not as if any of us in his position would turn around and say no, I don’t deserve this success, I’m not that good and pack it in!

I see he’s just signed to Columbia Records so must be making a packet. It is a shame that I know a couple of great singers who can’t get any work outside campsites but life is unfair, you just have to get used to that, there’s no point moaning about it!

At the end of the day, today’s celebs are just a reflection of today’s society. They are the ones who part with their money to make the celeb’s millions. I just don’t understand how brainless idiots on shows like The Only Way is Essex etc etc are so admired but I’ve realised there’s no justice in anything long ago. The trouble is, youngsters now will aspire to being X factor stars and glamour models rather than airline pilots and doctors. I don’t know where it’s all going to end! But you have to laugh that some brainless bimbo earns millions a year when an office manager gets about 35k for a 9-5 grind!

    • poppeelings May 9, 2012 at 7:30 pm #

Frank, what you’ve written there is nicely presented, well-informed and intelligent.

I think you’ve stumbled into the wrong discussion.

  20. Not 'Slick Nick' June 2, 2012 at 10:38 pm #

Olly Murs’ is annoying? That’s a bit rich coming from ‘Slick Nick’, which, by the way, is an insult to one of the greatest british rappers of all time!!

    • poppeelings June 3, 2012 at 10:58 am #

I’m honoured that you’ve named yourself after me. Thanks for the pointless comment… even the clowns in the Murs Garrison had more to say.

  21. Addish August 25, 2012 at 1:23 pm #

BTW! He sucks live… FOR REAL! I had to watch him at stage for 15 min. Only ones cheering was the young girls who dont know better. I was rooling my eyes giving him a “get me out of here- expression”.

    • poppeelings August 30, 2012 at 7:24 pm #

My sympathies… I fear it will take more than a facial expression to make him stop though.

  22. Ben August 27, 2012 at 10:03 pm #

I agree 100%. He’s completely average. Average voice, average looks, average songs. He’ll have faded from memory by the end of 2014 along with the Murs Garrison. The fickle airheaded bimbos that make his fanbase up will have moved onto another banal, glorified karaoke singer by then.

    • poppeelings August 30, 2012 at 7:20 pm #

I hope so, Ben. His fans are not even nice enough to be called bimbos sadly.

      • Megan February 12, 2013 at 12:42 am #

You don’t know us. You’re judging again. You’re looking at what, 10 of us here? There’s more than that. You’ve never met any of us?

      • Ellie February 12, 2013 at 1:19 am #

You don’t know us! You’ve never met any of us and have no idea what Olly means to us and how we relate to him and he helps us through his music.

  23. Biggie December 6, 2012 at 9:54 am #

100% agree. Its thanks to you michelle that cowell can put any twat on the telly for a month and people like you will buy it. Do your self a favour and look beyond top ten, you might just find talented musicians ( key word that) making far superior music for the love, if you can hack making your own mind up that is 🙂

To everybody else, simon cowells team are basically a better version of stars in their eyes, they can turn ANYONE into a pop star with enough marketing, stylists, musicians, producers etc Its like you actually believe these pop tarts have talent, your delusional.
Spot on critique of the album, considering the resources and fck me his voice has been so processed ( autotune and compression) haha who sounds like that in real life haha

    • poppeelings December 7, 2012 at 7:59 pm #

This is the best comment I have ever received. Thank you young sir for your accuracy.

    • Megan February 12, 2013 at 12:45 am #

He did so much singing trying to make it before the x factor? Yeah, he’s had vocal coaching but it hasn’t been processed??

      • Ellie February 12, 2013 at 12:59 am #

Whoever wrote this crappy article has no idea what he/she is talking about! You’re just writing loads of shit cos you have nothing better to do! Don’t diss the Murs Army, the Ollyettes, they are the best fanbase EVER! Get your facts straight before you write your next article.

  24. One Day As A Lion January 31, 2013 at 11:52 am #

I reckon if you dug up Amy Winehouse she would still sound ten times better than this irritating little shit. He looks like ‘Tim Nice But Dim’. Olly Murs should be killed. Its 2013 now, how come this berk is still on the radio, hasn’t Cowell found a new sock puppet yet?

    • poppeelings January 31, 2013 at 8:02 pm #

I predicted, wrongly, that his career would be dead by now. I under-estimated the attention span of ugly white teenage girls it seems.

      • Ellie February 12, 2013 at 1:20 am #

        Exactly. YOU. WERE. WRONG.

  25. poppeelings February 12, 2013 at 9:58 am #

I may have been wrong but the fact remains that 37% of his singles didn’t get into the UK top 10. Then again, all his songs are about how he can’t get a girlfriend. Bit tiresome.

    • Megan February 13, 2013 at 3:30 am #

ALL ? Some examples, Army Of Two is about the fans. Right Place Right Time is about his career/life at the moment. This Song Is About You is about his brother. They’re not all about that, maybe if you listened to the lyrics more or researched what they actually mean then you would find out. And i think 4 number one singles from 3 albums (one of which has so far only released one single) in 3 years is pretty good.

    • poppeelings March 3, 2013 at 8:25 am #

That is amazing. He completely neglects to mention the fact that TV time = record sales.

  26. Menahil March 9, 2013 at 10:02 am #

WHOA! The way you started out this article was VERY mean! Olly is a very sweet, modest and down-to-Earth person if you see his interviews and stuff. In fact he is one of the most modest celeb I know of. I personally really liked his album. And I am impressed by the fact that his live singing sounds almost exactly the same as his recorded versions, a rarity these days.

    • poppeelings March 9, 2013 at 4:29 pm #

Really? Did you see the link the other chap posted recently on here of Murs challenging his critics with numbers relating to record sales? That is not modesty or being down-to-earth, particularly when he is just one part of a large marketing team.

  27. Dan March 18, 2013 at 11:33 pm #

  28. John_John March 24, 2013 at 10:32 am #

No, I’ll tell what’s annoying about this pie faced moorlock is the permanently smug expression that is glued to his grotesque aunt Sally fairground face, because he still cant believe his own luck.
The sight of this gurning caricature, ‘singing’ makes me physically angry.
Simon Cowell is an evil genius because he
is never unafraid to underestimate public taste
to the tune of millions of pounds.
Everything about the music is mediocre. It is first rate nonsense, musical wallpaper meant to be talked over at dinner parties or played in Top Shop.
In short, it is music made for people who don’t actually like music.

Exactly the same way Peugeot make cars for people who can’t drive and the Sun
is balanced news for those who scrawl with crayolas.
    They can’t help it.
A lot of comments here have the ‘he’s so popular thread’. Popular doesn’t mean anything. En masse, people are real dumb.
    The reviewer isn’t spreading hate.
It is an indictment of public taste, because this chancer is producing the worst type of inconsequential fluff and the unwashed are lapping it up…..
Once upon a time, you had to be good at something to be on the telly and the radio.
I just want to know why we now worship this kind of mind knumbingly mediocre, lamefest
    as if talent is present?
It is a sad epitaph to a country who defined modern music….
The world used to take us seriously, too
    (sob)

  30. George April 4, 2013 at 12:30 am #

You’ll be happy to know that if you type ‘Olly Murs C@#t’ into Google, this is the first thing to pop up. A complete waste of skin. A person who, I’m almost certain, genuinely believes he’s Britain’s answer to Justin Timberlake. Dreadful music, dreadful dancing, being showered with undeserved praise by vapid individuals who wouldn’t know taste if it danced naked on their eartongues. How long before he’s In the Jungle/dancing on Ice/ballroom dancing/celebrity baking/celebrity dine with me-ing/celebrity… well you get the picture.

He’ll be taking a foray into the world of acting before you know it. God help us all.

    • poppeelings April 7, 2013 at 5:58 pm #

Haha – this news has made my weekend.

I’d imagine when he gets dropped from the record label, the following 5 years will see his mug on anything mediocre or tacky.

  31. Simon Cowell April 5, 2013 at 10:58 pm #

    murs isn’t worth talking about

    • poppeelings April 7, 2013 at 5:59 pm #

They thought the same about Hitler in 1937.

  32. Paul June 25, 2013 at 8:57 am #

I have looked into his music and stumbled upon a formula.

Length of time listening = start of song + time it takes to kick the knob off the radio

Proving it’s just not safe to hear Olly whilst driving. I have also sent the latter part of my formula as a request to all the major radio stations in the UK.

    • poppeelings June 28, 2013 at 6:50 pm #

Your dedication to science and good music has not gone unnoticed, Paul.

  33. thekiller12 September 15, 2013 at 7:16 pm #

olly murs suck limited vocal range, shallow music.just got the attention for looks.

    • poppeelings September 27, 2013 at 7:24 pm #

Looks? I don’t think so… his mediocrity in every way got him a record deal. His TV work helped him sell records.

  34. OllyWilliams'Lovechild December 9, 2013 at 12:15 pm #

Such a perceptive article. I hate Olly Murs with a passion, and as you mention in your first few paragraphs, I have worked with his type in the past. I remember him saying once in an interview he worked in Telesales, as did I, and boy have I come across many Olly Murs-types in that profession. Strutting round the office like Mr Big Balls just because they were top of the leader board, and with that shit-eating grin, because they’re banging the Team Leader on the quiet. He is one of those types though that after people leave a place of work with them, and move onto pastures news would go ‘Oh yeah **Insert name here**, what a knobhead he was’.

    Go Olly!!!

    • poppeelings December 15, 2013 at 8:32 pm #

Thanks for the support. The problem is, the Murs figure isn’t a ‘bad person’ so you can’t openly loathe them… you just have to suffer through the mediocrity and blandness they perpetuate.

  35. nicole December 30, 2013 at 12:15 am #

EXCUSE ME? if olly is so CRAP then why did he come second on the x factor, have sol out tours as 6 million followers on twitter and 15 million on facebook. ur just a sad butthole that has nothing better to do than hate on people. I bet you cant sing any better you d*ckhead. So before hating on olly go check your self .. can you sing better than him? no
are you sexy like him? no do you have 6 million twitter followers? no ……… SO GO AWAY AND STOP HATING ON HIM. you idiot

    • poppeelings January 1, 2014 at 7:49 pm #

He’s been heavily marketing across all mediums, particularly television, so of course he will collect a lot of followers. I can’t sing but I don’t pretend to, and he has a very limited range and average tone. Anyway by your logic, since you don’t blog or write critical pieces on music, you have no write to judge me or my work. Thanks x x

  36. nicole December 30, 2013 at 12:25 am #

OH and im not finished.. oh no not yet.
This article is complete BS. the murs army will defeat you they will hunt you down and they will beat the crap out of you. ur such a worthless piece of bloody crap thats what you are

    end on argument

    OLLY : AMAZING, TALENT, SEXY
    YOU: UGLY, TALENT-LESS, SCUMBAG,DILLWEED IDIOT

    BADBYE

    • poppeelings January 1, 2014 at 7:53 pm #

At least I’ve never been accused of ‘dad dancing’.

You should go and live in somewhere like Saudi Arabia or Kent; they’d love your attitude towards free specch.

  37. Smithy January 1, 2014 at 8:54 pm #

Seems to me that most of his fans on here need to study English. The spelling and grammar is as irritating as Olly himself. The bloke has an ego bigger than his face, and thinks he’s gods gift to women and music. Thankfully a radio and television can be turned off.

    • poppeelings January 4, 2014 at 4:02 pm #

But all his songs are about how he can’t get a girlfriend.

  38. Tarquin84 January 14, 2014 at 4:37 pm #

poppeelings is a music snob. It’s as straight-forward as that. If Murs had released the exact same music, but on his own, without the X-Factor, TV or mass-marketing, poppeelings would be nowhere near as critical of it/him. Therefore, we can determine that this review is not so much one of music, but one of the the music industry. That would be perfectly fine (with an appropriate title change), if only it weren’t completely and utterly derivative.

Sadly, poppeelings has offered us absolutely nothing new, novel or profound here and, as such, this page might as well not exist.

    • poppeelings January 19, 2014 at 6:41 pm #

I am a music snob; you’ve got to have standards. But I don’t dislike popular music by default simply because a few people have bought the albums. Go and check out my Pitbull album review if you need proof. Also there’s no need for a music review to offer anything profound; it’s just an opinion on music.

  39. Sophie May 17, 2014 at 8:44 am #

Firstly. I really have no idea why most of u guys are against him. He is an amazing artist and has high quality music. If u don’t like him, u can go fuck urself and if u don’t care about him, go kill urself but remove this website first!!! This is the worst rubbish I’ve seen in the whole of my life! And it is not something I want to see ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤ you Olly ❤

    • poppeelings May 17, 2014 at 8:55 pm #

There’s so much failure in this comment from a moral/intellectual basis that I don’t know where to begin.

      • Sophie May 17, 2014 at 8:58 pm #

U trying to offend me!? If u are ur guna regret it!

      • poppeelings May 17, 2014 at 9:13 pm #

No I was literally stunned into silence Sophie… can’t say any more than that. You wish death upon someone that doesn’t share your opinion; are you a Catholic by any chance?

  40. Sophie May 17, 2014 at 9:57 pm #

Nope, I can’t believe u wud put ur fucking opinion on a webpage and believe everyone will be ok with it! This is the worst thing anyone could do. Talking behind a celebrity’s back is amazingly stupid. It is highly frowned upon by all olly fans, good day 🙂

    • poppeelings May 17, 2014 at 10:19 pm #

why cant you believe I would put my fucking opinion on a web page? It’s what the internet was made for; independent thought and a challenge to staid media conventions.

      • Sophie May 18, 2014 at 9:49 am #

        It’s just rude. Ok?

  41. Eddyp November 23, 2014 at 10:34 pm #

John_john sums it up! just sickly as ever, take troublemaker , this song is the equivalent of a fat bird being shoe horned into a size 10 dress, doesn’t, work never will. Sounds like an executive said WTF where’s the hook? So they went back and shoe horned the word troublemaker into a already finished crap half baked Manilow ripped effort. Have a listen if you can stomach it, troublemaker is an afterthought.

  42. mark November 25, 2014 at 7:03 pm #

To some extent Jose Mourinho gets away with his incredibly smug facial expressions because he’s arguably the best at what he does for a living. Olly Murs, however, is probably not even the best person named Olly Murs at what he does for a living. His music is junk food for lazy ears. Perhaps fitting, then, that he was the most played ‘artist’ on radio last year in the UK, the nation which is reportedly the European capital of obesity.

Seriously, though, maybe he’s a 21st century version of the 90s girl group Vanilla, who apparently were the piss-take brainchild of record company execs who used the group to prove that you really can persuade the public to buy any old shite.

  43. Truth March 22, 2015 at 12:28 am #

Couldn’t agree more!….He is an annoying, talentless dipshit and I feel physically sick everytime I see/hear the fucker. What a joke.

  44. Arthur Seaton September 15, 2015 at 7:13 pm #

I know this discussion is a bit old. However, I enjoy whiling away free time by entering the name of ‘celebs’ I dislike and “…is a cunt” into google to see how many people agree with me. I’ve done this with Jack Whitehall several times and don’t even need to try it with Robbie Williams to know it would provide plentiful fruit. It was this passtime that led me to your discussion. The X factor perhaps provides the most disgusting elements of humanity available to observe. When I was a lad there was a greyhound in our street that would eat the faeces of other dogs, sometimes while it was still on the way out. This made repulsive, yet compulsive viewing for the local kids. Seeing Ollie Muirs on X factor makes me feel the same way – minus the compulsion to watch. I dont know if it’s his complete lack of sincerity, his phoney cheeky chap persona or his absence of any observable talent. Perhaps it’s his toadying to psychopathic Cowell? One thing I do know that is in less than 10 years, Muirs will be lucky to get any air time. As sure as rain, he and his ilk will replaced by the next batch of vacant eyed, fame hungry corpses. Murs is the type of guy who should be working in a menial job, addresaing his betters as ‘Buddy’ much to their annoyance. Muirs should not be on the telly. So well said poppeelings, well said.

Olly Murs… coming to a charity shop near you soon

  46. Ferdinand August 19, 2017 at 2:38 pm #

Yesterday I was watching Sony Entertainment Television Channel, I was waiting for Seinfeld.

Before Seinfeld The X Factor was scheduled at that hour, so I decided to watch a fragment of the show before Seinfeld started.

In between the votations Olly Murs appeared in the show, I had not heard of him before, so I gave him a go, because I’m very open to new music.

But damn, I was so wrong doing that, I should had change the channel in that moment.
This is the shittiest pop artist I have ever seen: I don’t remember the name of the song he sang, but I remember it was pretty shit:
    -Shitty chord progression
-Shitty and trite melodic line (I’m used to baritones that leave their comfort zone and I’m also used to listen to kick ass tenors)

And I thought the same you wrote on this article: “WTF was Simon Cowell thinking?” I thougt Simon Cowell was stricter in that matter, but damn son, that’s a pretty shitty artist.
